Early Adopters Pick: October 2002. The world's only true cyclonic vacuum, generating 100,000 g of centrifugal force and pulling dirt into an indestructible canister made from the same material used for crash helmets. Named for both its power and its ruthless approach to pet hair problems, the Dyson DC07 Animal upright is a piece of engineering wizardry designed by James Dyson, the inventor of cyclonic vacuums. A hit in Europe for years, Dyson vacuums are new to the American market. At the center of the machine's innovation is the Cyclone air path design, an eight-section chamber that creates powerful, consistent suction. The conical chambers generate 100,000 g of centrifugal force, pushing dust and dirt out of the airflow into the vacuum's 1-gallon collection cup. With no bag to clog, the vacuum's 270 air watts of suction remain steady. The large, transparent collection cup is easy to check and empties tidily--pop it off, hold it over a trash bin, and pull the trigger to release dirt without having to touch it. The DC07 also comes equipped with a multipart filtration system to improve overall air quality in the home. The HEPA filter, measuring 412 square inches in surface area, traps microscopic particulates and allergens. Expertly built, the filter is designed to last the lifetime of the machine. Suitable for bare floors and carpets, the Dyson upright features a 14-inch cleaning path and edge-cleaning bristles. A foot pedal switches off the brush roll for bare floors, and the nozzle automatically adjusts for various carpet heights. For above-floor cleaning, the vacuum also comes with a cleverly stowed, 17-foot quick-release hose with a reversible extension-wand handle. Onboard accessories include a crevice tool, a dusting brush, an upholstery attachment, and the Animal turbo tool. Designed for lint and stubborn pet hair, the turbo tool features an air-powered brush bar to extract hair from furniture, stairs, pet beds, cars, and other tight spaces. Made from the same material used in crash helmets, the vacuum is unquestionably durable. Plus, the design only puts 4 pounds of weight on the handle, so pushing and turning is easy. This model comes with a 35-foot power cord and a limited two-year household warranty. It also includes a carpet care kit--a canister of Groom Zorb odor-absorbent carpet cleaning powder and a bottle of Dyzolv spray for spills and stains. Furthermore, Dyson upright vacuums are the first and only vacuums certified asthma friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation.--Emily Bedard

    • Dyson DC07 simply pathetic

      by Nathan - 2010-07-26  Rated 1 stars
The Dyson DC07 has to be the biggest joke of a vacuum cleaner I have ever seen. Let me explain the situation: Years ago my mother bought a Kirby Generation 3 vacuum after receiving an in-home demonstration. I was only a child at the time but I remember watching the demonstration and watching how the salesman thoughtfully answered all of her questions. The price, which I remember as being around $1500 may have seemed a little high for a vacuum cleaner, but it appeared to be well worth it. That was 17 years ago and the only "problems" that vacuum ever gave my mother was the failure of the main power switch, which was replaced for around $30. As my mom got older, the weight of the Kirby became an issue, and my dad bought her the Dyson DC07. Although the Dyson is not in the same price range as the Kirby, it was certainly not what I would consider cheap. I had heard good things about Dyson so I was somewhat excited about the prospect of using one. Upon unpacking the Dyson I was immediately disappointed at how cheaply built it was. I don't care how well the plastic pieces may fit together when new, they are still PLASTIC. Sure the vacuum was lighter than the Kirby, but how long is this plastic gonna last? I also had to laugh at the look of the contraption. While some might criticize Kirby for not changing it's design significantly in many years, Dyson seems to have embraced the design of the Saturn 5 rocket. I was not going to judge a product on looks alone, the Kirby looked VERY odd to me when I first saw it. After the Dyson was set up and unpacked I began using it. I noticed immediately that I would have to run over the same area several times before it would pick up even visible particles of paper. I was not impressed at all with it's so called miraculous suction. Furthermore, although the vacuum itself weighs less than the Kirby, the lack of a self propelling mechanism makes vacuuming a chore. When I got married, my mother gave my wife and I the Kirby. Now that it is 17 years old, the power switch has again broken. Cleaning still needed to be done, so I borrowed the Dyson from my mother. My wife used the Dyson and promptly told me that if I EVER considered buying a Dyson that there would be severe consequences. She noted that the "automatic" height adjustment feature of the Dyson causes more harm than good. For example, on a very low nap carpet, it will not even pick up cat litter, it just pushes it around. The only way to actually pick up such things is to maneuver around the refuse and back the vacuum over it. She also noted that the vacuum required much more effort than the Kirby, despite being physically lighter. The ONE positive feature she noted was the easily used extension hose, beyond that she had absolutely no use for the Dyson. When I took the Dyson back to my mother I discussed it with her, and she admitted that she liked the Kirby much better as well. The only reason she gave it up was that it was simply too heavy for her to carry up and down the stairs anymore. She joked, however, that a better solution would be to simply own two Kirby vacuums and keep one on each floor of the house. Today I am going to go to the local vacuum store and buy the replacement power switch for the Kirby. I am going to repair it, and it is going to last for at least another 7 years before I have to touch it again. While I am in the vacuum store, as I have been before to buy supplies, I will notice that they do not even sell Dyson. All the vacuums they sell, new and used, are "professional grade," no cheap plastic consumer grade junk like they Dyson. Maybe my mother just got a lemon, but personally I find that unacceptable as well for the price that was paid.

    • Terrible

I've had this vacuum now for about 6 months and the only things I like are the fact that it is bagless and it hasn't broken yet. First, it weighs quite a bit and is not self propelled. It glides fine on hard surfaces but as soon as you hit carpet it's like trying to push a cinderblock across your living room carpet. And while it glides well on hardwoods/tile it is not superior at actually cleaning those surfaces. Second, forget trying to vacuum small area rugs. It won't do it. It will suck them up or wad them up. Either way it's still dirty, possibly destroyed and you'll be sweaty. Third, the cord is no self retracting so I spend most of my time fighting it and tangled in it. Fourth, the stretchy hose....not so stretchy. It works moderately well on my wood stairs since the vacuum is safely anchored at the bottom of the stairs (since it weighs an epic ton) but be willing to dodge the entire vacuum if you try to get under chairs sofas, beds, or vacuum the mini-blinds, as this hose is so stiff it can and will drag the entire vacuum across the floor to attack you. I think I've mentioned it's heavy so if you get hit by it, it hurts. I have to say this was a huge waste of money. I would rather have to buy a cheaper vacuum every year than to have dropped $500 on this thing that will likely last much longer and just create misery.

    • Piece of Junk not worth the money

If I could I would have given it 0 stars I would have it is not 1 star worthy. As soon as I bought my Dyson DC07 animal vacuum home and was using it the plastic on the side of it cracked, I noticed that when you vacuum the pet hair gets wrapped around the roller, Which is a royal pain because every time you empty the canister you have to unclog the roller which makes your fingers sore from literally pulling it out. The vacuum is not good at picking up dog hair you have to go over it several time as the wand is not people friendly at all. I notice when I am vacuuming it becomes really hard to push it feels like your pushing a boulder up a hill. I have no clue why it does this. My husband has taken this apart multiple times and can't find anything wrong with it. This was such a waste of $500 hard earned dollars. I could have spent the money on some other better things. Buyer beware don't buy this vacuum unless you want a piece of junk. If I knew then what I know now I would have never bought this vacuum. Also if you have a bad back this vacuum is something you want to avoid because it is so heavy to push. It even ate my bierber carpeting when I used it in my family room.

    • Best vacuum ever!

I've had my Dyson Animal for close to 10 years and have zero complaints. My big, furry dog is no match for this vacuum--she can shed all she wants and my Dyson picks it up. And I love never having to buy bags. I haven't spent a nickel on this machine other than its purchase.

    • Fantastic Vacuum

      by M. Miller - 2009-12-19  Rated 5 stars
My wife and I bought this vacuum back in 2005. We own 4 cats and 2 dogs and had burned through many other generic vacuums (Hoover, Bissell, etc) and decided to spend the money to buy a high quality vacuum cleaner. We are and were not disappointed. What a great vacuum cleaner. That being said, we just upgraded to the DC17 Animal (still a few years older than the new Animal vacuums) because the hose cracked and broke and we decided to splurge and buy a new one. Add to it that Dyson doesn't even show a DC07 on their website and we decided to upgrade. I've used the DC17 a few times and it appears to be a wonderful upgrade. I have no complaints. These have been great cleaners for us!!
