North America's eastern half, roughly from the Midwest to the Atlantic, was once a great deciduous forest. Although centuries of human intervention have cleared much of the land, the timeless forest remains in the spirit of the place. Today, even the shortest period of human neglect allows for the resurgence of the process of forest creation. The greatest gardens --- and happiest gardeners --- in this area will be those that take into account the nature of the land. In his unique and often thought-provoking new book, award-winning author Rick Darke promotes and stunningly illustrates a garden aesthetic based on the strengths and opportunities of the woodland, including play of light, sound, and scent; seasonal drama; and the architectural interest of woody plants. An alphabetical listing of woodland plants offers useful advice for every garden, emphasizing native trees, shrubs, vines, ferns, grasses, sedges, and flowering perennials that fit the forest aesthetic. More than 700 stunning photographs, taken by the author, show both the natural palette of plants in the wild and the effects that can be achieved with them in garden settings. The American Woodland Garden is a clarion call to a new awareness of our relationship to the natural world. This book will take its rightful place among the classic works that have influenced our concept of the American landscape.

    • Captures spirit of the woodlands

by Garbo (Ridgewood, NJ USA) - 2010-06-03  Rated 4 stars
The book does an excellent job of communicating the spirit of the deciduous forest and the photos are excellent. This is not a "how to" book. It's really good at capturing which plants coexist in the forest environment.

    • Truely inspirational

by Fleurs (Berkshire County, MA) - 2010-04-18  Rated 5 stars
This book has been and inspiration for me as well as a great resource. The pictures are really well done and although I started out thinking of the book as more of a reference I have now read it cover to cover and go back to it when ever I am planning new spaces on my property. You will enjoy this beautifully presented and informational book!

    • The American Woodland Garden

by Diana Bailey (Waban, MA) - 2009-07-05  Rated 5 stars
Next garden I have anything to do with will be a "Woodland Garden" but tough on 1/4 acre. Beautiful book, informative and inspiring and, for an English gardener, a wonderful introduction to Native American trees and plants.

    • Good for ornamental, bad for food growing

by Tanskanen Toni Antero (Finland) - 2009-01-15  Rated 3 stars
This is very good book if you want to grow ornamental plants, but for food producing it isn't so good. Still it's good because it can give you information how to produce food with beauty! And of course you can use this book's information for native "wild vegetables". If you want to grow food in your garden Edible Forest Gardens I & II is the best!

    • Superb

by sandyo (Pennsylvania, USA) - 2008-03-29  Rated 5 stars
Loved this book - a keeper for sure. Rick Darke does a great job of writing - I found his prose to be both instructive and inspiring-one really gets a sense from his writing that he knows his plants in intimate and fond detail. Photography is stunning as he captures the spirit of the woodlands and plants he shows in the book. I especially love how he depicts the changing beauty & contrast throughout the seasons of a local scene as he drove by on his way to and from work. What a treat it is to be a gardener and have gems like this one to read and enjoy.
