This movie is very shocking. Becuase it shows how the man Henry, played by Kevin Bacon was treated. After watching this movie, I was still in shock. This man was in Alcatraz becuase he stole five dollars. He later tried escaping Alcatraz. Only, to be caught and to be beaten, in a dungeon chamber for three years. I will not ruin the movie by all the details. But Kevin Bacon plays an intense role in this movie.A triumph in acting

For Christian Slater and Kevin Bacon, this may be their best performances. This was a good story to be told and it will keep you interest the entire length. Above all, Kevin Bacon's performance is magnificient!Murder in the First (Snap Case)

Henri Young stole five dollars from a post office and ended up going to prison, to the most famous, or infamous, prison of them all, Alcatraz. He tried to escape, failed, and spent three years and two months in solitary confinement - in a dungeon, with no light, no heat and no toilet. Milton Glenn, the assistant warden, who was given free reign by his duty-shirking superior, was responsible for Young's treatment. Glenn even took a straight razor and hobbled Young for life. After three years and two months, Young was taken out of solitary confinement and put with the rest of the prisoners. Almost immediately, Young took a spoon and stabbed a fellow prisoner in the neck, killing him. Now, Young is on trial for murder, and if he's convicted he'll go to the gas chamber. An eager and idealistic young attorney, James Stamphill, is given this impossible case, and argues before a shocked courtroom that Young had a co-conspirator. The true murderer, he says, was Alcatraz. I think this is clearly Kevin Bacon's best performance in this movie. A truly emotional movie that ranks among the top Alcatraz movies made. Gary Oldman also puts in a very solid performance. Christian Slater plays a youthful, inexperienced attorney to perfection. "Murder in the First" provides a new twist that involves a different type of drama. If you haven't seen this one yet, you're missing a real gem.Amazing Movie

MURDER IN THE FIRST is one of the movies you want in your library. Kevin Bacon gives the performance of a lifetime. He should have won the Oscar that year but it was released at the wrong time. Tom Hanks won that year. How many sides does a coin have?

One side: this is a good gripping court room and prison movie with outstanding actors (Slater, Bacon, Oldman, Macy, Dourif; not to forget Kyra Sedgwick in a brilliant but somehow frustrating `4 minutes'...). Bacon has killed a fellow inmate in Alcatraz and stands trial for murder in the first degree. Slater takes on the hopeless case, his first, and turns it around. The real killer is the system. Allegedly based on a true story. It is said that the court proceedings led to an investigation of the prison procedures, the shut-down of some of its facilities, and the eviction of the `managing director' of the outfit. Unbelievable how many faces of evil Oldman can assume. The other side: the real biography of Bacon's character seems to have been dramatically different, rather not the harmless petty criminal that is portrayed in the film. The real story seems to have been a different one as well. Does that matter? No, if you just watch it as above average entertainment. Yes, if you get the impression that there is a message here. The message can still be right, but if it is built on tofu rather than solid rocks, I lose some of my positive attitude. What made me watch it? As so often, I have no better reason than that the DVD was there... And I like court movies.
